What is Keep-ya-Paint tm All About?

It is about solving a perennial waste problem. Wasted paint is money lost, and more importantly, resources wasted.

Wasted paint in cans presents a serious disposal problem for landfill operators; in many regions it must be incinerated rather than simply landfilled as toxic paint components contaminate groundwater. Wasted paint also contaminates the air we breathe. It is my hope that as these problems become more widely recognized solutions such as offered by Keep-ya-Paint will be widely adopted. This product presents a win for the environment and a win for the consumer.. Leigh Miller PhD, Inventor.

Problem

Paint left in a partially emptied can reacts to the air trapped in the can: Why? Simply because paint is designed to dry out when in contact with air!

Have you ever opened a can of paint to hear the hiss of escaping volatiles? Apart from the waste, this is unnecessary contamination of the air you are breathing.

bulletOil-based paints lose volatile elements to the air and skin over, causing problems when paint is next required: wasted paint, contaminated paint, a thick skin that has to be removed and dumped. Even paint in an upturned can may “skin” on the underside.

bulletAcrylic or water-based paints lose water vapour to the air, thicken and begin to dry out. Changes in temperature inside the partially emptied can cause condensation of the excess water. This frequently leads to rust under the rim and around the can walls, again contaminating the paint and causing waste. Eventually the can itself may fail.

The Solution

Old solutions used for many years include adding mineral turpentine to oil-based paints, adding water to acrylic paints, putting plastic film on the paint, turning the can upside down, adding glass marbles to the paint and so on. All these methods have some merit and sometimes work, but they suffer from being messy, fiddly, erratic as to outcomes and all too frequently fail to do the job. Some even lead to disaster such as leaks from upturned cans!

Keep-ya-Paint offers a brand new, simple solution to the problem. It is a semi-rigid, clear plastic seal that slides into the can and is gently pushed down to the paint surface, expelling the air from contact with the paint. The seal sets up a partial vacuum when firmed down onto the liquid paint and will keep the paint in new condition for as long as the can lasts. (Hint: always store paint away from cold concrete floors and avoid moisture attack from underneath that also leads to rusting of the paint can).

Follow the steps in the diagrams on this web page to see how simple it is to use a Keep-ya-Paint.
